Fiddelium is performing at the Little Red Church – Comox

– This Concert has been Postponed! We will publish the new date when we have one!

Fiddelium (pronounced “fid-DELL-ium”) a small group of young musicians who perform in and around Nanaimo at many events such as festivals, private gatherings, markets, and community celebrations. The music we play is mostly traditional fiddle music, but with an interesting twist. Our arrangements are groovy and high-energy, and are created especially for us by our directors Geoff and Trish Horrocks.

In May of 2017 Fiddelium presented our first annual concert at Nanaimo’s Port Theatre, which was an enormous success. Hosted by Rick Scott, the concert showcased a wide variety of musical styles and sounds against a backdrop of original artwork by Alex Peck-Whyte. You can watch some footage from that concert here. Our 2018 show was again sold out, and featured our new Junior Fiddelium mentoring group alongside the Senior group and many wonderful guest musicians.

In February 2019, Fiddelium travelled to WHITEHORSE to collaborate with the Fiddleheads at the Sourdough Rendezvous ….. we were so glad to make wonderful new fiddle friends in the Yukon!

In May 2019 our show was built around the theme of global fiddle styles: what exactly does “fiddle music” mean, and how do different regions of the world shape their own fiddle traditions? Two giants of Canadian fiddle music, Gordon Stobbe and JJ Guy, joined us on stage to help tell the story. And of course, our wonderful host Rick Scott injected a big ol’ dose of joyfulness to the evening!

For two years in a row, Fiddelium has made the top ten in our category of the CBC Music Class Challenge. In 2017, we presented our version of the CBC Olympic Theme and in 2018 we paid homage to a great Canadian classic, Takin’ Care of Business by Randy Bachman.

Fiddelium embarked on a very successful tour of Vancouver Island in the spring of 2016, performing to sold-out venues in Port Alberni, Courtenay, and Victoria. In July 2015, we were the featured soloist with the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra for the centennial celebrations of the City of Courtenay. We also appeared at the 2015 Father’s Day Ceilidh in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. Other notable appearances include: Yellow Point Singers Christmas Concert (2018 and 2016); the CDC Telethon (2017, 2015 and 2014); Nanaimo Children’s BookFest (2017, 2016, and 2015); Lantzville Minetown Days (2017, 2014); the Nanaimo Sings Festival (2015); Bel Canto Choir’s 2015 Christmas concert series; and Festival Nanaimo (2016).
